Ystad is a city located in Skane, Sweden. The small town has a population of about 30,000. Its construction dates back to the 11th century and has since become a bustling port, local administrative center and tourist attraction. The city is also featured in the fictional stories of Detective Kurt Wallander by Henning Mankell.

About Ystad Sweden

Ystad is one of the most beautiful seaside towns in Sweden and is located in the southern part of the country. Ystad is a small town surrounded by attractive shops, small flower shops, cobblestone streets and nearly 300 half-timbered houses that you can visit while visiting the city.

Its proximity to the sea, the beautiful nature and beaches of the city has attracted many tourists from northern Europe and Germany annually to the rest of the world.

Ales Stenar

Ales stones, a megalithic tomb are the most important tourist attraction in Ystar area. This place is essentially like a rocky ship with a number of boulders lined up to form an oval shape.

The value of these boulders found in the area is more than it seems. Here some boulders are larger and others smaller.

The age of these boulders is estimated by geologists. According to geologists, the older boulders are about 5000 years old and the smaller boulders are over 1000 years old. This fascinating and rock-filled place was created in the Iron Age of the Nordic countries.

Saint Mary Church

The church is a brick-colored building with several buildings intertwined. This is a medieval Lutheran church and we must consider it as the main church of the city.

This church built in the late 13th century in Roman architectural style and was rebuilt in the 15th century with Gothic style. This was not the end, of course, and another rebuilding was done on the church. Its last rebuild goes back to the twentieth century.

This last renovation caused the church to be completely redesigned and built in a new style. What we see today is the result of rebuilding it in the early 20th century and there is now only one safe left over from the old church, decorated with watercolor paintings. Of course, this church is still used for religious worship and many people gather here on special days.

Charlotte Berlin’s Museum

Charlotte Berlin was the daughter of a state administrative court judge. She had great wealth that had inherited from her father. Indeed, after her father’s death, Charlotte gained great wealth.

The Charlotte Berlin Museum is actually her home where she spent the last years of her life. Charlotte donated the house and its accessories to the government in the last years of her life, about 1916 AD.

The government also decided to keep the house as a museum and all its furniture and equipment the same.   The site remains intact after Charlotte’s death and is used today as a museum.

Ystad Theater

The Ystad Theater, is more than just a leisure center and you shouldn’t limit its use to such a thing. It is interesting to note that the building of this theater has not changed much since its construction in 19th century and everything about this building yet is as before.

Of course, some parts have been refurbished carefully to preserve the original situation of the building.

Greyfriars Abbey

This monastery is a medieval house. Its brick building combines pale red and turquoise blue. The monastery is also surrounded by trees. This is one of the most important monuments in the city and has been well protected for many years.

There is also a great chance to test special restaurant in the city and you will be really amazed. The special Swedish fruits, cakes and delicious pastries you find in pastries, are tempting.

One of the special fruits you should try in this city is Lingonberry. It looks like blueberry, but the color is red. Ystad people jam this fruit and eat it with ice cream, cakes, pancakes and more.

At most local restaurants, you will find a meal called Husmanskost. It is a blend of meat, potato gratin, cream, broccoli, parsley and other tasty vegetables. The Swedes consider this dish a complete and nutritious meal for a day and if you ask them, they will definitely recommend it.

If you are looking for seafood, Herring fish is very popular here and people love this one. The make Herring fish smoky or sour and it gives it a great taste.

It is interesting to know that the catch of these fish is from Baltic of Atlas! It will influence the way they are cooked. Herring fish caught from the Baltic Sea will be fried in oil with breadcrumbs, but fish taken from the Atlantic Ocean are pickled in special sauce.

But the most important and national food you would taste in all over the Sweden, of course Ystad is Kanelbulle. This cinnamon cake has an excellent taste and is made of wheat bread dough, cinnamon, vanilla and saffron. You will find Kanelbulle in bakeries and ystad cafes.
