Bristol is a city located in south western part of England. The distance between London and Bristol is about 170 km. the population of Bristol is around 550,000 and it’s the sixth populated city in England. In 2017, Bristol was chosen as the best city to live in England. Although the city is a small city, but it has lots attractions and there are many activities you can do here.

History of Bristol

the city was built before 11th century. During the time this city has been changed to one of the most important city and port in Europe and England.
Because of the geographical location, Bristol has been a starting point to discover the new world for a long time. After Vikings’ discoveries in northern parts of Europe, a man named John Cabot started to discover world by a voyage from the port of the city.
This port was one of the most important spots to take slaves from Africa to North America. During 18th and the beginning of 19th centuries more than 2000 ship with about 50000 slaves moved from port of Bristol to North America. This number is so considerable.

 

Climate

Bristol is located in southern part of England, so it has one of the warmest weather in this country. The weather is hot, dry, and sunny most of the time, unlike most of the cities in England. The weather is affected by Atlantic ocean, and it’s somehow oceanic. Rainfall increases from southern parts to northern parts. The autumn and spring are the wettest seasons in the city.
From early November to late May, the city has snowing weather. Freezing is also usual in these seasons.

 

Environment

Environmental activities are so important in the city. So many plans around this issue have been done in this city. The city was chosen as the most sustainable city in England in 2008 because of the significant environmental activities. In 2018, Sunday Times, an important newspaper in England, introduced Bristol as the best place to live in Britain.
The Green Belt of the city is also well known around the world. This Green Belt is spread in the outside of the city in order to protect the farms from the urban life.

Today, Bristol economy is based on aerospace industry, defense, media, financial services, tourism, and information technology. the city is famous for its fighter airplanes. It was also named as one the scientific cities in England in 2005.

 

Religion

The biggest religious group in Bristol belongs to Christians. After that many people in Bristol claim that they don’t have any religions at all. The population of Muslims consists around 5 percent of Bristol.

 

Public transportation

The first bus network in England was built in the city. Light rail system is another type of public transportation in the city of city. It has been made in Bristol since 2000. Most parts of this system was completed in 2016, because the government didn’t provide enough budget for the project.
Bus rapid transit is the other way to transfer in the city. It is also called Metro Bus. It has been constructed since 2018.
There are also water transportation in the city. You can’t see similar kinds of transportation in many cities. passengers have been transferred by ferries. It is so amazing. Bristol has also an extensive cycling network. This system is frequently used by people. That’s because Bristol has one of the most sustainable environment in England.

There are two major rail station in Bristol which connect the city to different parts of London. These trains are high speed. There are also many roads and motorways in the city that connect the city to London and its suburbs.
